Your above statement is so important. People make mistakes, but to learn from these mistakes, we must take responsibility for them. Rationalizing poor behavior is a huge red flag for me.

I'm not familiar with The Serpent, but it sounds like an intriguing story. I would hate to fall in love with a serial killer — that would be painful on so many levels.
