Yes, I agree. There are many responsible dog owners who take their well-trained pets exploring with them and your friend is a great example. I love to hear those stories and they don't get media attention because nothing dire happens. When dogs accompany their owners backcountry skiing or hiking, training is key.

It is tragic when people and their pets lose their lives while enjoying our big backyard. And, usually, it is just an accident. But, on a few occasions, steps could have been taken to avoid the accident and those stories weigh heavy on my mind.
