Years ago, I worked in an office that had a football pool. Everyone would pick their team, and the team that won the most games got the pot of money. I'm not a football person. Everyone in the office knew it so they didn't ask me to join. I was offended because I was excluded. (I wasn't excluded because I was female, but more because I knew/cared nothing about football). Nonetheless, I would have liked to been asked.
In your example about the golf tournament, this is clearly gender discrimination, but it reminded me of the football pool! A wound of exclusion that still stings a little.
