The statistics are mind-blowingly grim, but as you said, we can take action one step at a time.

I lived in Germany for several years and they are great about recycling. We had a tiny garbage bin about the size of 2 large kitchen trash cans (for a family of five) that was picked up 2x a month. Everything else needed to be composted or put into recycling bags. I moved to Germany from New York and felt like I was really good at recycling, but Germany helped me become even better. : )
