My husband is a reader on this platform and not a writer. He has quite a few followers and has never written a story. My suspicion is that when he comments on an article, people randomly follow him and hope he will follow them back because they want people who leave comments. They aren't interested in his articles (because there aren't any), they just want him to read their stuff.
