My brother and sister-in-law had 3 labs ages 12,10 and 3. The 10 year-old dog passed unexpectedly and the 12 year-old was heart broken (a bonded pair) and passed a week later for unknown reasons (grief?). The 3 y.o. dog was grieving too and so lonely without his pals. He developed separation anxiety, so they had a pet sitter stay with the pup while they were at work. Sadly, the 3 y.o. passed away 3 months later.

It was so devastating for them. The dogs were family members and to lose all three within three months tore them apart. It has been over 10 years and they haven't gotten another dog. Their hearts are still broken. The loss of a cherished soulmate is so very hard!
