I agree, it is incredibly confusing. My husband, on the other hand, has been studying cryptocurrency for years and seems to understand it well. He is the guy that is constantly explaining it to others.

One thing I know is that it is very volatile, as you say, but it has now been around long enough that their are patterns, just like with the stock market. A fascinating currency that I am dabbling in very cautiously.
