Although I hadn't thought about the use of this adjective until your article, you bring up a good point.

I like using "strong person" - that seems like a good compromise. I frequently tell people they are strong or describe them as strong (usually in the context of emotionally strong, and I say it to both males & females). I like the word because it feels empowering, but I think it makes sense to say a "strong person".
